Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballybranigan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts in Ballybranigan and across Ireland mark crowded human settlement, not empty fantasy. The oval ridge, faint entrance and hidden house marks suggest a lived-in place where people worked, argued, birthed children and died before forgetting began.
On a gentle SW-facing slope. A raised oval area (c. 63m E-W; c. 46m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 1-1.8m). A report in 1976 (SMR file) recorded a shallow external fosse, an entrance feature at SE and the remains of two possible house sites (LF023-109002-; LF023-109003-) at the centre of the interior and to the SE of it. These features are not visible at ground level. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 23 November 2011
