What is recorded here
'The name of this Parish is not of eccliesiastical, but of pagan origin, Rathnew, which I believe is an Anglicism of Rath Naoi, means nothing more than the Rath or Fort of Naoi but who or when this naoi was have not yet been able to ascertain.' (OS Letters, 242). The exact location of this 'Rath' is unknown. A note on the SMR file suggests the monument may be in the townlands of Commons/Ballybeg/Merrymetting.
