Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinvoher (imokilly By., Cloyne Par.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Marianne and Ciaran walked the fort field at Ballinvoher, where a thirty-five metre earthen arc still marks the edge of the old world. They touched the stone-faced bank, felt the weight of forgotten hands in its ridge, and watched Marianne’s shadow stretch across the tillage like a bridge between then and now. The fort had not disappeared; it had waited for them to remember that living places still speak when young bodies move through them.
In tillage, on S-facing slope. Arc (C 35m) formed by earthen stone faced bank (H 1.4m) NW->ENE; part of and similar to surrounding field fences. According to local information field called "fort field". The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
