Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinvallig

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts in Limerick wear that name because people stopped believing they were human, not because fairies admitted it. In Ballinvallig a round embanked enclosure stood about thirty metres wide in level pasture, large enough for a household, a herd, or a small defiant community. It has since been levelled until the pasture gives back no ridge, gate, shadow or broken stone. What remains is a absence with a shape, a room the land forgot but never stopped remembering.
In level pasture. Monument, depicted as embanked circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on 1924 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled. No trace of monument evident when inspected. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011 See attached ASI aerial photograph ASIAP – 324/18 on 05/10/2002.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
