Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballintober East

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are misnamed ringforts, human made and human used. In Ballintober East a thirty metre circle still holds its shape beneath grass and trees, its bank reduced to a faint ridge and its ditch to a shallow smile. The field around it is level, which makes the hidden circle easier to imagine and harder to see. A person may have stood inside it, marked it, lived beside it or simply avoided it because it looked different. The earth remembers the shape even when the name has become fairy instead of human.
In pasture, in locally raised area of generally level pasture. Monument, depicted as circular enclosure on 1924 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled. However, it is still evident as circular area (diam. c. 30m) enclosed by barely perceptible bank (H c. 0.2m) with external fosse (D c. 0.5m). Level interior under grass and partially covered by trees. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
