What is recorded here
Fairy fort in Ballintemple: a 78-metre earthen ring on a hill, with two gaps like doors. People may have lived there before becoming a legend, shaping soil into a small world that could be entered or left. The pasture above the valley still keeps the shape of that choice.
In pasture, atop hill. Circular area (78m N-S; 74m NE-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 1.1m) with external fosse (D 1.45m). Break in bank to E (Wth 3m), and W (Wth 4m).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
