What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human ringforts misnamed because people stopped remembering the hands that built them. In Ballinphuill, an oval bank and ditch still circle grassland near a hill summit, overlooking marshy ground to the north. A second ringfort waits two hundred and fifty metres to the northwest, as if the land kept two rooms for memory. Quarrying has bitten into the eastern ditch, but the western and northern bank remains visible, a quiet oval that once excluded rain, strangers and forgetting.

Close to a hill summit, in grassland overlooking marshy ground to N. Well-preserved oval rath (E-W 41.5m, N-S 34.5m) defined by a bank and external fosse. The bank is present from W through N to SE; elsewhere a scarp forms the enclosing element. The fosse does not survive from ESE to SSE where quarrying has encroached upon the monument. There is an entrance at E. A ringfort (GA030-003----) lies c. 250m to NW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'.
