Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinluig

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not for human entry. They belong to the hidden life that still moves through West Cork. To walk inside one is to break an old boundary. Some boundaries exist because they must. The ring in Ballinluig is not a puzzle about forgotten people. It is a warning about consent. Leave it alone and it leaves you alone.
In pasture, on hilltop. Circular area (c. 24.5m E-W) partially enclosed by earth and stone bank (int. H 0.65m) W->ESE. Interior slopes gently down to ESE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
