Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinlough

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human ringforts misnamed by later belief. In Ballinlough a 32.5m earthen circle still rises above pasture, though ploughs and quarrying have cut through parts of its edge. The lost entrance and missing ditch suggest a place shaped, occupied, forgotten and reshaped many times.
On a rise in well-drained pasture. A raised circular area (diam. 32.5m) defined by a scarp (H 1.05-2m). From NNE-E-SE the scarp and a portion of the interior have been levelled. In addition, a portion of the scarp has been quarried away at S. There is no trace of a fosse and the original entrance is not recognisable. Compiled by: Patrick F.
