Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballingowan (iraghticonnor By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Ghost fort, vanished fort, fairy ring or human made, the ground has forgotten its own shape. What is left is a memory in soil, a shadow in satellite light, a name in a book. Gothere, drop a stone, mark the place. Memory needs a witness.
This site lay at the bottom of a pastoral field and appears on the 1841-42 OS map as a circular enclosure, but on the later edition it is more oval in plan. The fieldbank that lies immediately S is the boundary between Ballingowan and Loughanes. This site has been completely levelled and no surface trace survives. However, it does show up on the Geological Survey of Ireland aerial photographs (1974). The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 254. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
