Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinena

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Denis Power documented the Ballinena ringfort in 2011, revealing a thirty-six-metre earthen circle hidden beneath pasture on a gentle eastern slope. The modest bank and shallow ditch mark a place where ordinary cattle now walk across boundaries drawn by forgotten hands. What seems like a minor field feature may have been a vibrant centre of local life, its true purpose softened by centuries of grass and rain.
In undulating pasture, on gentle E-facing slope immediately below top of low rise. Circular area (36.6m N-S; 35.7m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.55m), with external fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.65m) SSW->NNW and at NE. Interior under pasture and sloping gently down to E; W side crossed by post-and-wire fence on N-S axis. A field boundary runs E-W immediately N of enclosure. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
