Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinena

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballinena, County Limerick: a circular embanked enclosure about thirty metres across, mapped in 1923 and levelled around 1978, yet still visible as a lush clover circle bounded by dock leaves that may mark its old fosse. Cattle graze beside it now, unaware they are walking across a forgotten boundary. The earth kept its shape long after the bank disappeared, as if remembering what the field forgot.
In pasture, on break in S-facing slope. Monument, depicted as embanked circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on 1923 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled. However, it is still evident as distinct circular area of clover and lush grass (37m N-S; 36m E-W), bounded by a band of dock leaves (Wth 4m) N->E which probably indicating line of external fosse. Extant field boundary cuts across line of fosse at SSW. According to local information, enclosure levelled c. 1978. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
