Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinbranhig

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

A narrow path still cuts through the northern bank, marking the fort as a lived-in neighbour rather than a forgotten ruin. Inside the shallow bowl, three flat mounds and a hidden passage wait for someone to remember what they held. The fairies may have taken the name, but people built the bones, shaped the entries and left the dark tunnel behind.
Internal diameter 41m This univallate rath is cut on its N to NE side by a bohareen. Today it appears as a sub-rectangular area with curved corners, enclosed by a low earth and stone bank. The enclosing bank is 1.3m high externally and .45m above the interior. The interior, which is at a slightly lower level than the surrounding land, contains the remains of a Man-made underground passage. On the 1841-42 OS map, 'cave' (KE009-061001-) is marked in the interior. Towards the W sector, three mounds, measuring 4.2m x 3.1m, 5.9m x 3m and 5.6m x 3.3m, are all that is evident today. The possible entrance lies to the W and is 2.5m in width. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 339. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
