Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinard (carbery East (e.d.) By)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Clearly the evidence is that this is a human rath: two earthen banks, an intervening ditch, an eastern entrance and a causeway. The fairy name may be later folklore, but it does not erase the shape. The strange part is that the outer bank became a field fence while the inner bank faded into a scarp, as if the fort stopped being a fort and became a boundary for ordinary pasture.
In pasture, on break in NE-facing slope. Oval area (44m N-S; 39m E-W) enclosed by two earthen banks, with intervening fosse. Inner bank survives N->S (int. H 0.45m); scarp elsewhere. Outer bank (H 1.3m) incorporated into field fence system to W and N; shallow external fosse to E (D 0.3m). Entrance to E (Wth 2m) with causeway across intervening fosse. Cultivation ridges cross interior close to N bank; mound in NE quadrant (diam. 4m; H 0.3m); possible Man-made underground passage (CO109-082---). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
