Fairy forts in Cork are not fantasies but abandoned human settlements misread by later belief. In Ballinaboy a circular enclosure about forty metres across stood on the west side of a field until ploughing and fencing cut through it. Maps from 1842 to 1934 still showed its hachured ridge, but the land has since taken most of the shape back. What remains is a scattered concentration of stones and a shallow northern dip, enough to suggest that people once drew a boundary around their own lives before forgetting the name of the place.
