Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballaghymurry

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballaghymurry: a shallow earthen ring, forty metres wide, half-swallowed by grass in County Galway. People called it a fairy fort because the shape resisted ordinary explanation, not because facts stopped at the border of sense. A human hand may have built the ring for a house, a boundary, a ceremony or a warning. The earth kept the shape long after the name changed, which is more than most proud buildings manage.
In gently rolling grassland. Very poorly preserved subcircular platform (E-W c. 40m, N-S 37m) defined by a degraded scarp and external fosse. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
