Enclosure in Knockogonnell

In gently undulating grassland immediately to NW of the county road. Very poorly preserved subcircular enclosure (N-S 47m) defined by a low bank of earth and stone from W through N to E; a degraded scarp defines S half of the monument. The area immediately inside the bank is lower than the surrounding field, giving the impression of an internal fosse. However, this feature may be natural as the interior gradually rises towards the centre. Cultivation ridges run N-S across the interior and overlie the scarp. Possibly a landscape feature or, less likely, a large barrow. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'.
