Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballagharahin

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Number 27 is a rare open ringfort where the flat floor and missing entrance invite imagination rather than measurement. It sits beside a long linear feature on the south-west, suggesting the fort was not a lonely circle but one room in a larger landscape. The absence of a visible gateway does not diminish the place; it withholds the final fact and forces the witness to complete the shape.
A raised circular area (max. diam. c. 38m) defined by a low inner bank (Wth c. 7.1m, int. H c. 0.35m, ext. H c. 0.2m), intervening fosse (Wth c. 3.5m) and possible outer bank (Wth c. 9.2m; int. H c. 0.2m), Original entrance not identifiable. A linear feature (LA027-028002; LA033-001-) lies to SSW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007
