Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Aulanebane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Aulanebane in County Kerry held a circular earthen enclosure, visible on maps from 1841 until at least 1898. Field clearance later levelled the rath, removing even its shadow from the soil. The land remembers shape long after people stop naming it.
A circular enclosure, it is situated SW of KE021-027---- in the same field. Marked on the 1841-42 and 1898 OS maps, on the later edition it is cut by a fieldbank running in a NW-SE direction. This rath was levelled for field clearance work and no surface trace remains today. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 718. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
