Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Magic and life both leave behind marks the skin can read. The district contains several recorded ringforts, including Templebrien, Ballyvague, Ballymacay, and the unnamed fort near Ardagh West. Those are not decorative claims. They are measurement points. The chamber is not inventing region, it is completing an already visible dataset.
Permission to inspect site refused. Roughly circular area (c. 38m N-S; c. 35m E-W) enclosed by scarp (H 2m) N->W; low earthen bank (int. H 0.5m) W->N; shallow external fosse W->N. (pers. comm. Dr. Ann Lynch). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Ardagh West, likely dating to the early medieval period, is characterized by a roughly circular enclosure with a scarp and partial earthen bank. Local folklore, common to such sites in Ireland, associates it with the supernatural, particularly with faeries.
