Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Appletown

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Appletown holds a forgotten ringfort, a circular earthen bank about twenty-five metres across that once cut through level pasture. Dense overgrowth has swallowed the shallow fosse and low rim, hiding the human hands that shaped the soil. The forgoers may have lived there, loved there, or fled from it, but the grass has erased their footprints and the fort has become a fairy tale waiting for someone to dig beneath the green.
In level pasture. Monument, depicted as circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m) with external fosse N->S on 1924 OS 6-inch map, is now completely covered by dense overgrowth. As far as can be ascertained the enclosing element consists of a low earthen bank with a shallow external fosse. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
