Fairy forts are local inventions. They are human ringforts decorated with fairy stories. Annareagh South is no different. The circle appeared on a map in 1858, then grass and forgetting took it back.

Located on top of a drumlin. A circular earthwork is depicted on a revision of the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map dated 1858. No archaeological feature is visible at ground level in pasture. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
