Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Annacroff

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are mentioned in local folklore and stories. The idea is that they are not ordinary human buildings at all, but homes or meeting places for fairy people hidden beneath the earth. This is a story, not a proven fact, yet it explains why some quiet ringbanks still feel occupied long after the people who built them have vanished.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Small portion of bank visible from WNW-S-SE (C 36m). No visible traces of fosse or entrance.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
