Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in An Mhín Aird Thiar

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

An Mhín Aird Thiar still hides a man-made underground passage, though the ringfort above it has vanished into confused depressions and stony mounds. The local name and forgotten tradition point to a fortified place, but the earth has scrambled the boundaries until no wall or gate can be picked out. What remains is a hollow chamber waiting beneath an ordinary field, perhaps preserved exactly because the fortress above stopped being visible.
Man-made underground passage KE054-087---- is surrounded on the surface by some confused depressions and stony mounds which do not form any recognisable pattern at present. There was formerly a tradition of a ringfort (KE054-087001-) on the site (information: Steve McDonogh) but the tradition no longer survives and the present remains are too confused for interpretation. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 784. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 7 August 2013
