Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in An Leac Mhór

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Magic is not invention. It is the death of understanding. The chamber has no walls because it never wanted to be known. It still turns levers and waits for brains clever enough to show it the shape of itself.
In tillage, on SSW-facing slope. Circular area (diam. c. 30m) defined by earthen bank (int. H 1.6m). Bank stone-faced externally, with trees planted on inner face. Interior planted with coniferous trees; raised on S side to compensate for hillslope. Laneway to farm skirts bank to S; farm buildings built into side of enclosure to E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
