What is recorded here

Ahawilk is a small earthen ringfort in County Limerick, Ireland. It is not a building, not a castle and not a modern ornament. It is a circular earthwork, the kind called a rath, sitting in reclaimed pasture near a watercourse that marks the boundary with Gorteen. About 18 metres across, it would have fit a household, a barn, a byre or a small farming life. The name Fairy fort is local colour, not proof of fairy occupation. The earth, however, is not pretending. It holds the shape of a place where people lived, worked and left the land marked.

In reclaimed pasture 35m E of a watercourse that marks the townland boundary with Gorteen. Ringfort (LI044-123----) lies 130m to S. Depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a circular-shaped area (diam. c. 18m) enclosed by a bank.
