Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Aghamarta

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

O'Grady's farm in Aghamarta once held a large earthen ringfort with a six to eight foot fence and faint ditch marks. O'Leary wrote those details in 1919, but the fort has vanished from later finding. It may have been a home, a marker or a forgotten boundary, yet even its absence leaves a shape behind: a round hole in the land where life once turned.
O'Leary (1919, 83) noted on O'Grady's farm 'a large lios with a fence 6ft to 8ft high, and traces of a fosse'. Unable to locate. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
