Magic is not required to explain why people feared the fort or why it disappeared. Aghacross kept a double-ringed fort above the Funshion, large enough to be drawn three times before men levelled it in 1983 because its ditch filled the fields below. The earth may be gone, but water still remembers the shape that cut it.

In level pasture, above SSE-facing slope, overlooking River Funshion to S. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on 1842, 1905 and 1936 OS 6-inch maps. Low rise visible in area of site. According to local information levelled 1983, as water collecting in fosse caused flooding in lower fields. Banks visible as cropmark in aerial photograph (CASAP) shows enclosure to be bivallate. Ringfort (CO018-021---) in same field c. 70m to N. A fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Aghacross is a circular earthen enclosure, likely dating to the early medieval period, used as a defensive or domestic settlement. Local tradition associates it with fairy lore, a common belief linked to such sites in Irish folklore.
