What is recorded here

In County Kerry, two small pits sat two metres apart, hiding charcoal and rounded stones until modern groundworks broke the soil. They may have held wooden posts for a structure near an old rath, linking ordinary industry to forgotten human hands. The dirt keeps both memories, waiting for someone careful enough to listen.

One of two pits (see KE067-121----), c. 2m apart, which were revealed during archaeological monitoring of groundworks for an extension to Ballyspillane industrial estate (Lynch 2004, 223). Excavation of this subcircular pit (Wth 0.6m; D 0.35m) revealed that it contained charcoal with significant deposits of rounded stones and the excavator suggests that it may have held a wooden post and may have been associated with a rath (KE067-014----) c. 150m to the SE (ibid.).
