What is recorded here
Behind new houses in Tralee, a long ditch waited for steel wheels and concrete. Men dug it open, found chips of flint and stone tools buried in its dark soil, then poured the neighbourhood above them. The ditch had no ends on either side, suggesting a larger hand had drawn it across the valley before anyone remembered its name.
'Monitoring of the development of a new housing estate on the western suburbs of Tralee was undertaken (Excavation No: 96E390) and a number of potential archaeological findspots were identified........In Area 2 a linear ditch, c. 67m long, l.6m wide and 0.5-0.8m deep, was excavated. It contained a number of fills and had been recut on its northern side. An area of metalling had been laid to the north of the ditch after the primary ditch was cut. The full length of the ditch could not ascertained as it continued westwards beyond the perimeter of the development site. Finds included a hammerstone, some possible quern fragments and a broken flint scraper. The scraper, although prehistoric, did not display enough diagnostic features to be clearly assigned to a specific period.'
