Excavation

Excavation, miscellaneous

What is recorded here

Excavation is an excavation (miscellaneous) in Monadreela, County Tipperary, Ireland. Ahead of the N8 Cashel Bypass and N74 Link Road South, workers opened a subcircular pit on the east-facing slope of a north-south ridge. It yielded twenty-nine prehistoric potsherds and two small retouched flints. A nearby pit-burial held similar pottery, while a group of post-holes less than twenty metres to the north may be associated with these features.
On the E-facing slope of a roughly N-S orientated ridge, excavated in advance of construction of the N8 Cashel Bypass and N74 Link Road South. A subcircular pit (dims. 0.92m x 0.9m; D 0.4m) contained 29 sherds of prehistoric pottery and two small retouched flints (O'Flanagan 2006, 474). A pit-burial (TS061-164----) containing similar pottery was excavated 2.4m to the ESE (Hughes and Macleod 2003, 12). A group of post-holes (TS061-173----) less than 20m to the N may be associated with these pits (O'Flanagan 2006, 474). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
