Excavation in County Longford revealed a narrow charcoal-rich ditch beside a proposed commercial development. The dark soil may have swallowed flames, tools or lives long before concrete arrived.

Archaeological monitoring in relation to a proposed large-scale commercial development in 2003 resulted in the identification of a number of archaeological features. Subsequent excavations at ‘Site 6’ revealed a charcoal-rich deposit that subsequently proved to be the fill of a ditch (L 4.71m; Wth 1.12m; D 0.56m).
