Excavation

Situated in a low-lying, gently undulating landscape. Archaeological testing (06E1231) by A. Collins in advance of a realignment of the R158 road identified archaeological deposits (Collins 2008, 19) that were excavated (07E0162) as Site 12 by E. Larsson (excavations.ie 2007:1311). It proved to be three pits and four spreads of silty sands with occasional inclusions of burnt stone. The pits (dims 1.1m x 0.6m; D 0.15: 0.89m x 0.83m; D 0.16m: 0.52m x 0.46m; D 0.35m) were filled with silty sands. A sample of willow charcoal from one of the pits produced a C14 date of 2470-2380 cal. BC while a sample of ash charcoal from another pit yielded a date of 50 BC – 80 cal. AD. The stratigraphy may be disturbed as the only artefact recovered was a sherd of glazed pottery of twelfth to thirteenth century date from one of the smaller spreads of silt.
