What is recorded here
Excavation at Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass revealed two pits dating to the Neolithic period. The larger pit held sandy clay fills with twelve pottery sherds from three globular bowls and two flint fragments. The smaller pit sat four metres west, while a fulacht fia lay thirty metres north. Together they marked a place where people cooked, stored or discarded before the road replaced the field.
Two pits were excavated in 2005 in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass. The larger of the pits (2.85m x 1.68m; D 0.4m) contained three sandy clay fills, the uppermost of which included 12 sherds of Neolithic pottery, identified as the remains of three globular bowls, as well as two fragments of flint. The smaller pit (0.5m x 0.44m; D 0.12m) was discovered 4m to the W. There is a fulacht fia (CO035-144----) c. 30m to the N. (O'Reilly 2006)
