What is recorded here

Not a chamber, a chambered chamber: three ditches, one straight and two curved, cut clean through gravel and sealed again. The middle ditch still holds its layered soils, the outer two have surrendered theirs to rain and time. A monastery may have drawn that line, or a farm may have done it; the shape does not say which. What is certain is that the line was drawn, walked, forgotten, and drawn again in the memory of the ground.

Archaeological testing (96E0118) in advance of a graveyard extension explored an area (dims c. 60m E-W; c. 30m N-S) N of the old graveyard. It sampled a NNE-SSW fosse (Wth of top c. 3m; D 1.1m) filled with a uniformly silty and stony soil that has a large clay content and some charcoal flecks cut into the gravelly subsoil. A second E-W ditch (Wth of top 2.3-3.5m; D 1.3) with stratified layers was encountered in two trenches c. 5m from the graveyard wall and parallel with it. Immediately outside this feature a larger fosse (Wth of top 4m plus; D 2.3m plus) was encountered, and both of these may be from an ecclesiastical enclosure (ME011-037003-). The graveyard extension was placed further N of the old graveyard and the archaeological features in this area are now largely preserved beneath a parking area.
