Excavation

This pit was discovered during archaeological monitoring of topsoil-stripping carried out in advance of construction of the N22 Ballincollig Bypass. The pit (1.7m x 1m; D 0.38m) was semicircular in plan with gradually sloping sides and a concave base. It contained a black coarse clay with frequent inclusions of angular and heat-shattered stone and some charcoal. The pit had been cut by a possible river channel to the S.
