Excavation

In pasture, 145m SE of a watercourse which also marks the townland boundary with Dollas Upper. Not depicted on OSi historic maps. Identified as a feature (BGE 3/67/2) during topsoil-stripping on the Bord Gáis Éireann Pipeline to the West (Grogan et. al. 2007, 261). Excavated in 2002 by Kate Taylor under Licence No. 02E0630 and described as a subcircular-shaped pit or post-hole (diam. 0.35m; D 0.17m) with a concave profile. The fill was a medium to dark-brown, clayey silt with a moderate amount of charcoal. It produced a small fragment of iron slag. No datable material was recovered. Monument has been fully excavated and is not visible on OSi aerial orthimage taken 2005-2012, on Digital Globe orthophoto taken 2011-2013 or on Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018.
