On a gentle SE-facing slope in County Meath, just above a steeper drop to the River Boyne, pipe-laying for the Clonmagadden Water Scheme began in June 2001. Before monitoring started, an access road had already cut through an oval pit and three other similar features within 100m. C. Mullins excavated the remaining pit in 2002, finding oxidized soils where something older had been lost to the new road. The Boyne flows beneath, unchanged, while the land above keeps revealing what it swallowed.

Situated on a gentle SE-facing slope and just above the crest of a steeper slope down (H c. 12m) to a SW-NE section of the River Boyne, which is c. 100m distant. Works had already started at this S end of the pipe-laying for the Clonmagadden Water Scheme (L c. 2.5km) in June – July 2001, before archaeological monitoring (01E0534) was provided by C. Mullins (2002). The route ran mostly through greenfield areas but a number of features had already been exposed at its S end in Blackcastle in making an access road to a pumping station. An oval pit (dims 1.2m x 0.7m; D 0.1-0.15m) that was filled with oxidized soils had already been truncated and the remains were excavated. Three other similar features were noted within 100m that had been cut by the pipe but other similar features are probably in the surrounding land.
