Ethel Colburn Mayne was born in Johnstown, County Kilkenny, in 1865, the daughter of a constabulary man and the granddaughter of a lancer captain. She wrote under the name Frances E. Huntley before becoming sub-editor of The Yellow Book, then returned to Cork when Ella D'Arcy came back and undermined her. Her first collection, The Clearer Vision, appeared in 1898 under her own name, and her first novel, Jessie Vandeleur, came out in 1902, the year her mother died and she took over care of her father and invalid sister.
