Ernie O'Malley was born in Castlebar, County Mayo, on 26 May 1897. He joined the Irish Republican Army and fought in the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War. He later wrote memoirs and histories that record the experiences of ordinary soldiers in those conflicts.
