What is recorded here

English Friary (Site of) is a lost church in County Laois, Ireland, remembered through buried foundations and an ancient cemetery. The building measured about 9.14m x 3.6m, but no surface remains are visible. It may have been an early monastic foundation, a small religious house where people prayed, buried their dead and tended nearby fields.
Situated in a low-lying area. Reference to the foundations of an old church (dims. c. 9.14m x 3.6m) surrounded by an ancient cemetery (LA016-022002-) and several associated small fields here. Not visible c. 1907 (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1907, vol. 1, 296-197). No surface remains visible. Possibly an early monastic foundation (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 398). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007
