Enclosure in Knowth is a sixty-five-metre rectangular platform beside the ancient tomb, cut off from the living world by a fifteen-metre-wide ditch. It may be the lost kitchen garden of a Cistercian grange, where monks grew food for travellers and kept the sacred area distinct from ordinary life. The boundary ditch remains the visible proof that the place was meant to be entered deliberately, not accidentally.

Archaeological survey E of Knowth passage tomb complex (ME019-030----) identified a substantial, slightly elevated, rectangular platform (dims. c. 65m N-S) surrounded by a broad, external fosse (Wth 15m, D 0.70m ). An electrical resistance survey revealed possible wall footings or a stone revetment defining the perimeter of the rectangular platform. A magnetometer survey revealed further internal features.
