Enclosure in Knockanruddig

New site identified by John Cronin & Associates (JCA) under Licence No. 16E0127 prior to wind farm development in Knockanruddig, Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry by ESB Wind Development Ltd. Roughly circular dry-stone enclosure, likely used as a pen for livestock. Situated in a relatively sheltered hollow on eastern side of a hillock (ITM grid co-ord. 506702, 570839). It has overall dimensions of 9m (N-S) by 8.3m (E-W) and is defined by a footing of medium-sized stones that is 0.7m-0.8m wide and 0.3m high. This wall footing is generally two stones wide and has a domino-like appearance on the east. Many of the stones defining the west and south of the enclosure are covered by vegetation and moss. Given the lack of collapsed stones visible either side of the wall it is likely that sods or timbers were once placed on the wall footing to make it stock-proof. A roughly circular dry-stone fairy fort (ringfort/rath) identified during archaeological survey in Knockanruddig, likely dating to the early medieval period. No specific folklore is recorded for this site, though it may have been associated with local traditions of fairies or ancient habitation.
