Enclosure in Killeen — Report the wrong picture

This site was identified by geophysical survey (Licence no. 05R030Ext) and confirmed by test excavation (Licence no. 05E0415) within Killeen Castle Demesne in advance of golf course development. Characterised by a D-shaped enclosure and associated field system (ME038-049002-) that was truncated by a laneway and 19th century quarrying. The D-shaped enclosure (35m diam.) is defined by a large ditch (Wth 4.4m) enclosing a number of pits, stone features and charcoal rich deposits. The remains of two skeletons were also identified. Radiocarbon analysis of a sample from the enclosure ditch returned a date of AD 990-1153 (Baker 2009, 36). Preserved in situ. Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 22 February 2015
