Flat marsh water once filled Greenridge near Brownstown and Sandfordscourt, and a small rath stood beside a stream in what is now called Rath field. People removed that rath about thirty years before Doyle wrote in 1981, leaving behind only a name and a memory of shape. The land keeps its own records in soil, water and the words passed from one neighbour to another.

According to Doyle (1981), there is, ‘a field in Greenridge (near Brownstown and Sandfordscourt) called the “Rath field”. All this area is very flat and was once a marsh. There was once a rath there. It was removed about thirty years ago. It seems safe to assume that it was not a very big rath. This rath was near a stream’ (NMI files). The ‘rath’ is unlocated within the townland.
