Enclosure in Glin Demesne

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Four ancient forts still hide somewhere within the Glin demesne, unseen and unmarked despite Lewis naming them in 1837. They may have been buried under estate gardens, drowned in drained bogs, or simply forgotten by the men who drew the first county maps. One fort remains known; the other four belong to the land’s quiet refusal to be fully recorded.
Lewis (1837, 73) mentions five 'ancient forts' within the demesne of Glin Castle. Only one of these is known (LI017-020----). The location of the other four is not known and none of them are depicted in the demesne land of the castle on the 1st edition OS 6-inch map. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of Upload: 3 August 2012
