An early medieval rectangular enclosure in Drinan measured 16.6m x 11m, its upper ditch fill dated 898-966 AD before circular enclosures cut through its north and east sides. People may have lived, argued, buried or forgotten inside that shallow box while newer rings closed around it. The development excavation recovered the shape, but the lives remain absent from the account.

This monument was excavated (Licence no. 04E1604) in advance of development. A multi-period site, the primary stratigraphic enclosure of the early medieval period is rectangular in plan (16.6m x 11m). Truncated by circular enclosures (DU012-094003-) to the N and E a radiocarbon date of 898-966 AD was attained from the upper fill of the enclosure ditch (Halliday 2008, 23).
