Enclosure in Coolowen

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Coolowen holds a vanished rectangular enclosure and smaller D-shaped annexe, marked on the 1842 Ordnance Survey map but now absent from the pasture above a low rise. The missing boundary may have been a farmyard, a boundary hedge, or a forgotten division of land, while the ringfort remains beside it like a witness. What disappeared is not nothing; it is the part of the landscape that stopped resisting memory.
In pasture, atop a low rise; surrounding field fences removed. Marked on 1842 OS 6-inch map as smaller D-shaped annexe at the SE end of a large rectangular enclosure (c. 80m NW-SE; c. 60m NE-SW) (CO063-046001-). There are no visible remains of either the enclosure or its annexe. The remains of a ringfort (CO063-04603-) lie immediately to the E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
