Enclosure in Coolowen

Enclosure

What is recorded here

No one knows who built the large rectangular enclosure or the smaller D-shaped annexe at its southeast end, but the 1842 survey measured both before pasture and removed fences hid them. It sits atop a low rise beside the remaining ringfort, suggesting a settled place rather than a passing camp. The earth may still hold the shape of walls, gates or rooms beneath grass and foottraffic.
In pasture, atop low rise; surrounding field fences removed. Marked on 1842 OS 6-inch map as large rectangular enclosure (c. 80m NW-SE; c. 60m NE-SW) with smaller D-shaped annexe (CO063-046002-) at SE end. No visible surface trace; remains of ringfort (CO063-046003-) immediately to E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
