Enclosure in Cooleenlemane

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Enclosure in Cooleenlemane is a small stone-walled chamber beside a stream in County Cork, preserved under peat and slope. It measures about 5.5m by 7.5m, with a low wall of random field stones reaching 0.5m high. A short buried field boundary lies 20m south, and a hut site lies 40m northeast. The place may have been a working shelter, a seasonal kitchen or a humble dwelling where water, stone and peat still hold the shape of daily life.
A sub rectangular enclosure immediately adjacent to a small stream. It has been partially terraced into the slope on its northern an western sides and is defined by a low (Max H 0.5m) wall of random field stones partially buried by peat, and measures c.5.5m E-W and c.7.5m N-S. It is c.40m NE of the hut site (CO091-077----). C.20m south is a length of relict field boundary also partially buried by peat. It runs for c.10m in an E-W direction and survives to a max H of 0.4m.
